& Background
My name is Eric, and I'm a PhD student in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. I'm interested in the influence of technology of amateur artistic and cultural production. I've done research on this and related topics, including collaboration, distributed work, social identity and communities of practice. My advisor is Stephanie Teasley, and I've also done work with Mark Ackerman and Judy Olson. In Fall '06, I was one of the GSIs (along with Jude Yew and Libby Hemphill) for SI 504, taught by Michael Cohen and Paul Edwards.
I'm a native of Michigan, and somewhat to my surprise, have lived here my whole life. I went to undergrad at Michigan State off and on during the 90s, finally getting a degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities in 1997. After that, I did a variety of web and dot-com work for several years, before returning to grad school in 2003. I earned a Masters degree in Human-Computer Interaction from SI in 2004. In doing so, I found that I really enjoyed research and the mental stimulation of academia, and so decided to stay and pursue a doctoral degree.
I'm married to a wonderful woman named Amy Weimer Cook. We have one son, the ever-entertaining and rapidly growing Finnian, born in November 2004. Since the late 80s, I've made music in various flavors of rock, electronic and improv genres.
